Instagram & the Future of Marketing

Instagram which only has 2 years in the game went from around 800,000 daily users in its first year to over seven million today! That means Instagram has surpassed the all powerful Twitter in daily users. Why does that matter?

It matters because as marketing professionals it can show us a trend in social media. The sooner we understand a trend the sooner we can get ahead of it.

First we need to understand two things that advance media today. The first is advancing technology and the second is the availability of said technology. When the Internet first started all it had was essentially text. Bulletin boards or BB boards to share information. As Internet speeds increased, websites became more advanced with images, flash, and even the “animated gif”. As technology advanced so did the bar of what is considered a good website. This holds true with social media as-well. For example it was ok and efficient enough to just “tweet” or text message what your doing to the world. Just as those BB boards were considered just fine. However as we have now entered a world of 4G data and every mobile phone is in fact a very useful camera, we are now seeing that a simple text tweet is just not enough. We need to send photos to tell the story of what we are doing.

Photos are nothing new really, expect now everyone and I mean everyone who has a cell phone has a camera. Now it might be that the cell phone camera is not the best camera in the world. But thats changing every day. This year its the 5 megapixel cell phone camera. Next year we will have the 12 mega pixel camera. And isn’t it also true that the best camera in reality is the camera you “have” otherwise no matter what mega pixel it has it just useless.

So if this trend holds true, what do you think is pulling up right behind?? Video. Sure a video is a much bigger file. Sure a video is not the best quality on a cell phone. However, just like using text tweets advanced to using photo’s on instagram, soon uploading a video will be just as natural. So who will fill this void? Well there are already some in the game, but who and what is going to really open that door. Stay tuned…
